August 8 -- Club meeting in-person at Barnes Hall. Richard Farewell will present "Desert Crossing". Rio
Grande’s desert crossing has never been the most favored target for
railfan photographers. Indeed, the intermountain desert is usually
just the background for those going from somewhere to somewhere.
The desert’s background scenery is in places spectacular but it has
always taken a long time to get there; other Rio Grande lines have
always been closer and thus have been far more popular. However,
Dick Kindig, Bob Andrews and Otto Perry shot film in the desert during
the steam era; later others found images in the mud mounds and bordering
cliffs during the diesel heyday of Rio Grande traffic during the 1970’s
and 80’s. This
show will highlight a steam-era chase by Dick and Bob, then cover the
freight-heavy 1970's and 1980’s with special coverage of the last years
of the fabled Rio Grande Zephyr. Finally, the end of Rio Grande’s
presence in the desert is fully covered by images of the Dirt Train,
which utilized the last un-patched D&RGW “Tunnel Motors” running on
the property. This month's meeting will not be recorded for viewing on YouTube. We meet at 7:30 pm in Barnes Hall, on the south side of the church at 2950 S. University Boulevard in Denver, Colorado. |
Upcoming Events: August 19 - Boreas Pass Day concert and open house at Como, Colorado. See their new water tank! August 30 - September 2: National Narrow Gauge Convention at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Aurora, Colorado. September 16: Open
house for interurban car #25 at the Federal Center in Lakewood,
Colorado. Free event. Our organization owned and restored
this car over many years. September 16: Club visit to Colorado Live Steamers Open House, north of Byers, Colorado. |

Tornado Hit the North Antelope Rochelle Mine, Wyoming, June 2023 |
Expecting the worst when they responded to a “direct hit” by a large tornado on the North Antelope Rochelle Mine in
northeast Wyoming on Friday (23 June 2023) evening, emergency
responders are breathing a sigh of relief that only six people were sent
to hospitals and nobody died. “Considering
the circumstances, it’s a lot better than what it could’ve been from
what we’re hearing from down there,” Campbell County Undersheriff
Quentin Reynolds told Cowboy State Daily. A
small army of emergency responders from Campbell and Converse counties
got the call at 6:07 p.m. and rushed to the mine, which straddles the
county line about 60 miles south of Gillette, assuming a “mass casualty event until we know better,” said David King, emergency management coordinator for Campbell County. The tornado reportedly scored a “direct hit” on the large open-pit coal mine, flipping vehicles and railcars, he said. Talking
to Cowboy State Daily while driving his mobile command unit to the
mine, King said there was “one building that took a hit with people in
it.” (June 23, 2023) |

The
Como heritage railroad campus was damaged in late June 2023.
Severe weather set-back by an unusual wind shear likely out of the south
Monday night, June 26th, slammed into the roundhouse. The visitor
entrance door was damaged. Winds blew through the roundhouse and
damaged bay doors #2, #3, #4 & #5. The gusty wind even broke a
door brace. Repairs began immediately on Saturday morning, July
1st. The
youngest volunteer Takoda Meyers jumped in, helping to disassemble the
visitor doors in preparation for rebuilding with father Aaron and mother
April. Volunteers
went at full speed to repair roundhouse doors damaged by the unusual
wind shear - helped by Jim Scoville, Alex Hois, Bob Revis, Jon
Dierksheide, Steve Burt and Steve Schweighofer. |

Montana Rail Link Yellowstone River Bridge Collapsed June 24, 2023 |
On
June 24, 2023, Enivironmental Protection Agency (EPA) received a report
of a rail car incident located near Reed Point, MT, approximately 40
miles west of Billings, MT. Montana Rail Link reported the Twin Bridges
bridge collapse. The rail line includes 52 total cars; 17 cars were
derailed. 10 cars entered the Yellowstone River under the Twin Bridges
bridge. The 17 affected rail cars contained sodium hydrosulfide, asphalt
liquified petroleum, molten sulfur, and scrap metal. The quantity of
the contents in the rail cars varies but is typically in the thousands
of gallons. Representatives
from the Montana Dept. of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), local Law
Enforcement, Fire Department, Fish & Wildlife Services (FWS) and
Montana Disaster & Emergency Services (DES) arrived on scene. EPA
deployed an On Scene Coordinator, along with technical (START)
contractors who provided additional support and helped coordinate
environmental assessment and response activities with State and local
officials. (Information courtesy EPA) Regarding
passenger trains that once used this bridge - Between St Paul, MN and
Logan, MT, as well as between Garrison, MT and Pasco, WA, the North Coast Limited and the Mainstreeter
used the same routes. So the now-collapsed bridge east of Reed
Point, MT would have carried both the Mainstreeter and the North Coast
Limited across the Yellowstone River.
Routes
for the two trains diverged between Logan, MT and Garrison, MT; with
the NCL traveling over Homestake Pass through Butte, and the
Mainstreeter traveling through Helena and over Mullan Pass. West
of Pasco, WA, both trains split into two sections that traveled to/from
Seattle, WA and Portland, OR. |
